Supersonic Dive from Space

Felix Baumgartner
Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner hopes to make a second attempt at a supersonic skydive over New Mexico on Sunday 14th October or Monday. The jump was postponed due to wind on Monday, then aborted at the last minute because of wind gusts on Tuesday. Baumgartner is hoping to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier by jumping from a capsule floated 37 kilometres into the stratosphere by a 55-storey helium balloon.
The balloon is so delicate that it can take off only if winds on the ground are 3.2 km/h or less.
The dive team calculates that, in optimal conditions, Baumgartner will accelerate from 0 to 690 miles an hour in the first 40 seconds of his descent. At this speed, he will catch up to, then pass, the speed of sound. (BBC and National Geographic).  At that height his blood could boil as the air is so thin.
